Progression of Talent Management as a critical HR Practice

July 23, 2013 8:46 am

Talent Management is one of the newest and the most critical aspects of HR management in the contemporary times. It plays a vital role in the success of an organization and involves identifying, recruiting, selecting and retaining highly talented, proficient, skilled and dedicated individuals. Moreover, talent management has a much broader scope and is not confined to the HR department only and involves all the organizational departments.
The practice of managing the talent in an organization proves to be very advantageous as it works upon motivating and boosting employee morale for establishing a better relationship between the employees and the organization. For a strategic implementation of this practice, the HR managers and concerned professionals need to develop a clear understanding of this concept in a detailed manner.
In the earlier times, a department named as Personnel Department was concerned with looking after employee affairs and took care of proper and timely employee compensations and rewards. Later, the concept of HR management took over the department with broader functionalities that include training and development, employee engagement and retention, grievance handling, etc. Today, HR department stands out tall and is one of the most integrated departments and can be regarded as the central processing unit of any organizational system. It establishes a complete channel that start from workforce to business processes and lately to customer relations.
The process of talent management involves consequential steps to be followed by the HR departments. The first step is the planning process that involves formulation of strategies, budget planning and job requirements. Once the openings are finalized, it is followed by recruitment and selection process coupled with evaluation and assessment of the existing employees’ performances.
These processes are followed by succession planning and implementation. This process involves the internal swapping of employees from one position to other that involves the senior management to identify the candidates who are suitable and ready enough to grab higher and senior positions. Thus, the process has to be well in alignment with the future business plans and meeting its requirements.
On the whole, talent management process facilitates the HR teams to effectively perform their roles and responsibilities stretching from hiring to firing of employees. If an organization has a well-integrated talent management system, then it can easily achieve its business goals and set new milestones with its highly qualified, talented and dedicated workforce.
